Best Coast – Crazy For You

Album Review by Oisín Kealy | 06 Aug 2010
Album title: Crazy For You
Artist: Best Coast
Label: Wichita
Release date: 2 Aug

Fronted by feline-enthusiast and former child actress Bethany Cosentino, these Californian pop slackers deliver their sun sozzled debut. There’s a lot of charm in the diary-entry lyrics about boys, and Cosentino’s manifesto is made clear instantly through opener Boyfriend ("I'd love him to the very end/ But instead he is just a friend"). Without the forgiving brevity of her EPs, the theme of laziness reveals itself as the next most recurring motif.

Crazy For You’s title track is one of the only songs here that breaks through the hazy fatigue, owing a substantial nod to Vivian Girls (of which drummer Ali Koehler is a former member) and their forebears. Our Deal and When The Sun Don’t Shine are two more brief treats, and while you have to hand it to Best Coast for reigning in their tunes before the three minute mark, occasionally the benefit is lost when you need a keen ear to hear that the key has changed.
