Church of Noise – June 2013

Preview by Ross Watson | 31 May 2013

As the solstice approaches, any of you tree-huggin' types out there might want to start the month with a bit of pagan folk-inspired post-metal from Edinburgh's Falloch at Bannermans (2 Jun). Candlelight alumni Cnoc an Tursa and old-school extreme metal trio Tommy Concrete & The Werewolves are also on the bill.

Next, a dilemma: will you be at the stoner doom extravaganza with San Francisco sludge duo Black Cobra, Canadian shredders Bison B.C. and Norwegian noise rockers Årabrot at Ivory Blacks, or will it be a grunge rock double-whammy with distortion kings Mudhoney and psychedelic punk vets Meat Puppets at O2 ABC? Rising power trio METZ are supporting – no big deal. Both are on the same night, so roll the dice (5 Jun).

Herculean's poppy, melodic brand of alternative rock makes its way to Nice N Sleazy (7 Jun), followed by some thuggish U.S. hardcore from Bulldoze at Ivory Blacks (8 Jun). Over at Auld Reekie, you can head to Bannermans for some nihilistic stoner drone from Liverpool's Iron Witch on the same night. They play alongside their crusty pals Corrupt Moral Altar and three trudging doombringers, Atragon, Eagletomb and Dune, on the same night.

Heatsick's hypnotic, loop-based take on electronica is surely worth a shout – he plays Nice N' Sleazy (14 Jun). Promising local act Holy Esque's rough-cut anthems grace the same venue the following night (15 Jun). Brooklyn's finest psychedelic rock tyrants Naam arerolling into town, with local psych wizards The Cosmic Dead providing support at the 13th Note (16 Jun). Next, some good old-fashioned riffage comes courtesy of long-standing desert rock originators Masters of Reality, who play live at The Cathouse (17 Jun).

A safe bet for the most straight-up fun gig of the month will be taking place at the 13th Note, where American indie rock band You'll Live are set to play with much adored, anthemic Sheffield emo duo Nai Harvest. Cavalcades and The Sinking Feeling will be kicking things off with a couple of heart-on-sleeve warm-up sets (24 Jun).

If you seek noise in its purest form, feel free to get your eardrums pulverised by power-violence crew Afternoon Gentlemen and grindcore nutjobs Suffering Mind, again at the 13th Note (26 Jun). We don't get enough Irish post-hardcore these days, so it feels good to announce that Pigs as People will be seeing the month out at Bannermans (29 Jun).
