Feature by She Drew The Gun | 18 Jul 2017

Listen to She Drew The Gun's selections in the Spotify player below, and read on for the band's reasoning behind their choices.

Ed Scissortongue – The Prospector
[Chavassian Striking Distance, 2015]

When I hear [Scissortongue] I am instantly transported to a dangerous impending future; these feel like post-apocalyptic stories, swimming in the depths of a dark language sea. It’s a cold foreboding winter, a warning, a picture of a future you don't want to be part of, but it's beautiful and you cant stop listening. [Louisa Roach]

Kate Tempest – Europe is Lost
[Let Them Eat Chaos, 2016]

What can I say? I’m a sucker for a poet, jumping on tangents, letting them lead wherever they want but landing back on the path they were always headed on, the wisdom hidden in the description, the righteous anger channelled into the banger, the flow, incredible. [LR]

Aldous Harding – Horizon
[Party, 2017]
Stop what you’re doing and watch [Harding's performance on Jools Holland], the last time I saw something like this was Future Islands' Seasons. Simplicity, raw emotion, poetry, sadness, painting melancholy with language and melody like Leonard Cohen’s abandoned love child. Unnervingly stunning. [LR]

Dope Lemon – Marinade
[Honey Bones, 2016]
Found [Dope Lemon] during a sleepless night on a desperate YouTube frenzy; [they] have become a favourite for all of us. Drawing on Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros with melancholy tones of past loves, chilled vocals, lazy guitars and those distinct drawls, these Aussies are the top choice for those laid-back hazy days. They’re just dope. [Jenni Kickhefer]

Cameron Avery – Dance With Me
[Ripe Dreams, Pipe Dreams, 2017]

Cameron Avery of Tame Impala’s solo side piece is a bit of a cinematic gem. Treading vibes of Nick Cave, the suave guitar licks, tense drums, [and] with them silky vocals you’re suddenly in a spaghetti western waiting for Clint Eastwood to give you that side-eye smirk, [I'll] dance with him. [JK]

Father John Misty – Total Entertainment Forever
[Pure Comedy, 2017]

There’s no denying it, we’re all disciples of FJM here; an absolute highlight of our year so far was catching him at Glasto. His unapologetic acid tongue, serving us all with a harsh satirical view of the world through swaggering guitar licks and intense prowess. With Macaulay Culkin as our JC in the video, we’re at the confession box saying our ten Hail Mistys and four Our Fathers, preaching to the choir. [JK]

The Undercover Dream Lovers – Good Luck
[2016]

We first came across these Brooklyn dream-poppers at SxSW when they joined us on the bill for our first showcase in Austin. Always better to get the first hit of a new band live, and these guys blew us all away with reverb-soaked vox, boss hooks and hazy pop vibes. Bought the t-shirt and haven’t stopped playing this track since. [Jack Turner]

Julia Jacklin – Don’t Let The Kids Win
[Don't Let The Kids Win, 2016]

Stumbled upon Julia whilst surfing the Spotify airwaves recently. Her classic country tone and slacked out strum strokes are enough to hook you in instantly, but it’s her heartfelt lyrics that cut deep on this one. Regrets about eroding family connections and ageing anxieties are pretty much universal for everyone, and like any great song that fucks with your emotions, you just wanna keep coming back for more. [JT]

Timber Timbre – Grifting
[Sincerely, Future Pollution, 2017]

Timber Timbre have been a permanent SDTG playlist fixture for some time and after continually hammering Hot Dreams we were all eagerly awaiting the release of Sincerely, Future Pollution. Leaving behind creepy spy movie vibes for synth-laden dystopian premonitions, Grifting is one of many great moments on the new album. Imagine David Bowie’s Fame on Ket and you’re pretty much there. [JT]

Kendrick Lamar – HUMBLE.
[DAMN., 2017]

We all got a heads up from the man himself on The Heart Part 4, advising us to get our collective shit together, and when this track dropped like a fireball out of the sky, all our eyebrows were left singed. From humble Compton beginnings knocking out butties in the local scran house to total world domination, King Kenny takes his rightful place on the throne of hip-hop with this banger. [SDTG]
