Great Scots: 2021 in Scottish Music

As we wrap up at the magazine for another year, it's time for our annual Great Scots playlist of music we've loved in Scotland this year. Enjoy.

Well, it's been quite the year hasn't it? If there's one thing that's kept us going through it all, though, it's been music. Since we returned to print in late 2020 we launched a new monthly column called Music Now (online you'll find it as a monthly Scottish new music round-up feature) which celebrates exclusively Scottish releases, meaning we're shouting about exceptional Scottish music now more than ever.

While it's always exciting for us to collectively celebrate our favourite Scottish albums of the year via a poll with our music writers – check out our 2021 top ten here – allowing ourselves to only shout about only ten records doesn't feel like enough when every month throughout the year we're bombarded with release after release. So many, in fact, that quite often a lot of stuff still manages to slip through the cracks.

So it delights us to be able to pull a whole host of songs together into one Spotify playlist as a big end of year blowout for your listening pleasure; 2021 is actually the fifth time we've done this too – pats self on back – so if you like what you hear in this year's playlist, why not seek out the last four years' worth of music we've been shouting about too. Find The Skinny's Spotify profile here.

Right, without further ado, please see below our jam-packed 2021 Great Scots playlist featuring tracks from each of our top ten albums of the year, from the likes of Hamish Hawk, Eliza Shaddad, Mogwai and TAAHLIAH as well as one hundred or so more. Thanks once again to all the music-makers out there – you really do make a huge difference.
