Young Fathers' latest track Only God Knows received its debut play on Lauren Laverne's BBC 6 Music show this morning, ahead of the release of T2 Trainspotting in cinemas this weekend. Described by director Danny Boyle as "the heartbeat of the film", the new song from the Edinburgh trio features backing vocals from the Leith Congregational Choir; listen to the track in the player below.

In a statement shared alongside Only God Knows, T2 director Danny Boyle said: “Trainspotting, the original book is like a modern Ulysses. It’s unsurpassed I think, and reading it is still like the ‘rush of ocean to the heart’. You're always looking for the heartbeat of a film. For Trainspotting it was Underworld's Born Slippy. For T2 It's Young Fathers. Their songs are my heartbeat for the film. And Only God Knows is that rush again. The ocean. The heart.”

Young Fathers have a trio of songs on the film's official soundtrack – Get Up from their Mercury Prize-winning album Dead, and Rain or Shine from most recent LP White Men Are Black Men Too also feature – while elements of their tracks Low, No Way, Dare Me are all used in the film's score. Elsewhere on the OST, Iggy Pop's Lust for Life returns in a remixed guise after its iconic turn in the fist film's opening sequence, while Underworld, Blondie, Wolf Alice and Run DMC are also featured.

T2 Trainspotting is in cinemas from 27 Jan – read our review here.
