Arcade Fire have joined forces with Mavis Staples on new track I Give You Power

The track follows a similar formula to that found on the group's most recent album Reflektor, with ominous vocals by Staples and Win Butler over a driving synth groove. Introducing the track the day before Donald Trump's inauguration as President, the band said: "It's never been more important that we stick together and take care of each other."

Speaking to Zane Lowe on Beats 1 Radio, Butler remarked: "I talked to Mavis last night and she said, ‘Now more than ever we just need to hold onto each other.’ For us it’s a feeling of solidarity – to not feel powerless and focus on what we can do as individuals and try to do our part."

I Give You Power is available to download now; all proceeds from sales of the track will be given to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). Arcade Fire violinist Sarah Neufeld plays Summerhall in Edinburgh on 3 Feb; the band play a series of festivals across Europe this summer, including Roskilde, Isle of Wight Festival and Primavera Sound.
