Glasgow-based three-piece, Wendell Borton, released their second EP at the start of this month, entitled Crawl. Recorded by Catholic Action and Casual Sex’s Chris McCrory in his own Shady Lane recording studio, with production that encapsulates the band’s acerbic stage energy and tight-knit songwriting.
At The Skinny we’ve managed to get our hands on the premiere of the music video for Crawl, the lead single to be taken from the EP. Singer and guitarist Daryl Rankin tells us: “Crawl sums up how I try to distance myself from people who are greedy, [who] constantly need to pass the buck and fail to take responsibility for anything that they do. The lyrics stem from particular frustrations I have felt in both my professional and personal [life] over the past couple of years, and also touches on how to make the most of certain situations despite not having much going for you. Other than that... it's a fuzzy pop song!
“I've been listening to a lot of Real Estate and Teenage Fanclub, and have always been obsessed with bands that focus on big guitar sounds and heavy tones as a focal point of their work (y'know, Dinosaur Jr, Pavement, Weezer and all of the good stuff),” Rankin enthuses. “I certainly think our more recent efforts have a renewed focus on melody, and I am more than OK with that. At the same time, I definitely feel that Crawl is a massive step in the creative direction that we want to take this band.
“We don't have much video content online at all, and [this] will be the first a lot of people have seen of us! It was important to me to do something that captures how close we are as friends, and not just as bandmates. We had a lot of fun with it, and I think that comes across in the final cut. We just want as many people to enjoy our band as much as we do, and hopefully this video will encourage people to get on board with what we are trying to achieve.”
