Casiokids @ Electric Circus, 6 Oct

4/5 stars

Toddler-like grins hang on the faces of the five Casiokids and the quickening beats of Togens Hule soon turn the venue into a bouncing playground of fun. Thundering drums and incessant cowbells support a swirling menagerie of guitars and electronics, filling the room with frenetic splendour. With songs wilfully extending into relentless jams, it’s clear that the Norwegian outfit rely on sheer, unabated energy. The vigour with which Gomurmamma is received would have an older crowd in danger of cardiac arrest.

Undaunted by the zeal of the venue's security in reaction to fervent dancing, Casiokids reinforce their unabashed eccentricity with a punchy cover of Ivor Cutler's Darling. The crowd hardly seem to notice the Scottish nod, but dance on in delight regardless. As the rhythm section swells to three for the thumping climax of Fot I Hose, those grins - long since fledged into beaming smiles - threaten to lift faces off. It's the 7th birthday party you never had.
