Detour presents... Remember Remember / Miaoux Miaoux @ Glasgow Science Centre, 8 October

For the past couple of years, the selfless folk at Detour Scotland have been doing everything in their power to make Scottish music fresh, intriguing and something out of the ordinary. This weekend’s collaboration with the Glasgow Science Centre – to create the sonic culmination of their World Space Week celebrations – might just be their most impressive endeavour yet.

After a brief impromptu astronomy lesson, Julian Corrie – AKA Miaoux Miaoux – takes the planetarium floor with only laptop glare and the twinkle of countless constellations above his head to guide the way. What follows is part live performance, part soundtracked astronomical exploration; Corrie’s sparse, subtly layered beats and slow rushes of smoothly distorted guitar make for a tranquil yet absorbing accompaniment to the stargazing experience. Even when the pace picks up and moves into more conventionally melodic territory, he never once loses the sense of wonder that rules the room.

A brief break gives the chance to catch a suitably eclectic halftime mix from guest DJ Stuart Braithwaite and, upon return, Remember Remember are picking up tools. Still on a roll from releasing last month’s spectacular The Quickening LP, the normally understated Ocean Potion is given a multi-coloured kick-start with Joe Quimby’s emphatic playing style, amplifying the air of delicate mystery and pushing the crescendos to earth-shattering levels. Later, John Candy’s jaunty hook is lent a new degree of off-kilter potency, thanks to a combination of tight musicianship and visual splendour. As Scorpio passes overhead, it’s fitting that their set closes with a majestically powerful cut from last year’s RR Scorpii EP, a poetic end to what can legitimately be termed a magical evening.
