Zappa Plays Zappa @ Picture House, 18 Jun

Article by Caroline Hurley | 25 Jun 2009

Treating the crowd to as many favourites as it is possible to cram into one evening’s entertainment, from Peaches En Regalia through Montana and finally letting the whole of the Picture House provide the vocals on Bobby Brown, Zappa Plays Zappa lives up to the legend. Dweezil Zappa and the musicians he has assembled in this line-up are astounding in their ability and enthusiasm, being asked not just to play familiar hits, but to bring them alive for stalwart fans and hopefully some curious younger ears. Dweezil himself, never trying to emulate his father’s on-stage presence and pranks, spends the entire evening beaming out at the crowd, seemingly satisfied that both the performance and the reaction are a fitting tribute and celebration. In these commercial times, seeing this music live seems, to many in the crowd, almost a religious experience. Truly, this man is the son of Zappa.
