Wolves in the Throne Room @ Stereo, 23 October

Live Review by Ross Watson | 25 Oct 2011

Eco-spiritualist brothers-in-arms Nathan and Aaron Weaver cast a dark spell over Glasgow this evening with their meditative, trance-inducing brand of black metal. As the venue fills with the pungent smell of smoke and incense, there’s already a heavy sense of atmosphere looming that carries well into the night. Soon, the live incarnation of Wolves in the Throne Room begin the audience's initiation with Thuja Magus Imperium, the opening track from new album Celestial Lineage. .

Their lengthy song structures, comprising mainly of frantic blastbeats, piercing shrieks and emotionally sombre guitar shreds often collapse and give way to thrumming ambient sections, giving them some degree of crossover appeal. It's tempting to fixate on the technical aspects of their performance tonight – to try and piece together the component parts of their oddly empowering sound – but it feels more natural to give in and let songs like I Will Lay Down My Bones Among the Rocks and Roots completely engulf the senses. All of this may appear ostentatious on paper, but in person, succumbing to their dusky charm feels more like second nature.
