We See Lights @ 13th Note, 3 Apr

With raw four-part harmonies and the occasional ukulele, Woodenbox with a Fistful of Fivers (****) careen through a rockabilly set of macabre mariachi folk. Complete with beards and plaid-laden torsos that would make a lumberjack weep with pride, Woodenbox have just enough humour to pull off their Southern jives. This set is slick, with well-thought out songs and drumming tighter than the stitching of their scraggly tartan hats, hinting that there is more to Woodenbox than their hairy visages would have you believe.

Maybe it’s down to homesickness, having just returned from a sojourn in Canada, but headliners We See Lights (***) are, by contrast, achingly Scottish. Accents in tow, they administer a dose of pleasant, percussive folk clearly reminiscent of Arcade Fire and Broken Social Scene, with more band members than RZA could shake his pinky at. Ensemble harmonies are undoubtedly their strong point, and We See Lights are twee as you like, potentially leaving a disturbingly saccharine taste in the more cynical of mouths. Yet, they have a little fight in them, tackling the odd drunken heckle with cardigans unscathed, their single Parachute remaining a highlight.

Woodenbox play Stag and Dagger Festival, Glasgow on 23 May. They launch single ‘Hang the Noose’ at King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut on 13th June.

We See Lights’ debut album is due later this year.
