United Fruit @ Captain's Rest, 10 Feb

Solid evidence that good noise is alive and well in Glasgow

As Citizens (***) take the stage - or rather, slightly raised platform - of the tiny Captain's Rest, the scattered masses bob their heads to the band's brash hardcore bursts, juxtaposed with rattling guitars and flutters of experimental melodies. A few mistakes and a generally shy performance aside, this all goes down rather well.

Hey Vampires (****) on the other hand are a noticeably more charged-up affair, proceeding to unleash a barrage of spitting, heartfelt roars, and maniacal bass batterings, which combine with solid drumming and frenetic riffage to produce an energetic, raw and ear-damaging set, that despite battling with broken strings, effortlessly grabs the attention of tonight's crowd.

Enter United Fruit (****), who command the final gathering (now including members from the other bands) with a tight, yet visceral and often funky set. From opener How Long's off-beat rhythms and soaring choruses to the riled-up energy of closer Shake, the band lay waste once again to the Rest's PA, weaving a brazen rhythm section with discordant guitars and jagged, melodic screams to the delight of the crowd, especially when the action spills onto the floor. On the whole, this is concrete evidence that good noise is alive and well in Glasgow. [Ryan Drever]
