Tokyo Police Club lead a transatlantic assault on King Tut's

Article by Finbarr Bermingham | 16 Jun 2008

Leading the frenzied transatlantic assault this evening in King Tut's is The Mobius Band, a highly palatable, synth heavy trio from Massachusetts. Their brief set stops short of captivating, but they use the short window of opportunity to underline their potential. Anyone with a love for anthemic, Casio friendly indie-pop could do worse than to fire up their MySpace.

The hour stage-time allocated to Tokyo Police Club before tonight's gig always looked slightly ambitious. Known for the frugality and infrequency of their releases, it comes as no surprise when the Toronto fourpiece vacate the stage after 45 minutes. Similarly, few familiar with their output would be surprised by the efficiency and urgency of their King Tut's set. TPC, it would seem, don't really do frills. A slow opener quickly succumbs to the entirety of their fine debut LP, Elephant Shell. In the live arena, the brevity of their songs is startling. Every time the crowd get going, they slam on the brakes. Singles Your English Is Good and Tessellate generate the first intimations of audience participation (a sing-along for the former, a shout-along the latter) and their EP tracks are given a hero's welcome. The performance is enjoyable in a 'true to record' way, but a little improvisation certainly wouldn't go amiss. [Finbarr Bermingham]
