Tim Kliphuis @ Tron Theatre, Glasgow, 20 Jun

Article by David McNally | 05 Jul 2010

Dutch violinist Kliphuis describes the music he's currently playing as fusion, and going by tonight's gig the raw material being fused is bebop, Brazil, Afro-Cuban, tango, classical and Scottish reels and jigs. What we are really hearing his quintet do is speak in melody (except for percussionist Sandro Ciancio, he talks with his hands).

When Kliphuis and guitarist Nigel Clarke are trading fours, the ebullient playing and mile-wide grins make it seem more like they're telling jokes. And at one point the humble Tron becomes one of the world's great concert halls as pianist David Newton and the leader play a heart-burstingly romantic Clair de Lune. That the band can go from this to mischeivous sambas and even a Burns song with a Morrocan twist says a lot for the fluency and facility of these musicians.

If there's such a thing as serious fun, these guys are having it, playing at a very high level but never losing sight of the mission statement of live music, which is to entertain. [David McNally]

Played as part of Glasgow International Jazz Festival 2010.
