A multi-vocal, multi-guitar onslaught of sound, tonight Action Group delivers

Article by Neal Parsons | 06 Jan 2008

Boyfriend/Girlfriend (3/5) are our first potential rock stars in waiting tonight. Pulsating with angst and nervous tension, they careen through a set full of ideas but short on hooks. Their riffs are discarded with abandon, never to be seen again, although they remedy this by ending every number on an intense note.

Viva Stereo (2/5) make for a more polished proposition, although they still fall wide of the mark. There is plenty of swagger and posturing but the music and lyrics prove too bleak and repetitive. Relying on an iPod for much of their sound - including drums - it becomes difficult for the faintly JAMC-tinted Glasgow band to see through a song with conviction.

Action Group (4/5) is certainly an apt name for this finale, being as they are a group full of movement and energy. Leading with a multi-vocal, multi-guitar onslaught of sound, tonight they incessantly deliver and succeed in lightening the mood. They rely on songs often driven by bass lines that scuttle along the floor before creeping up the spine. Unfortunately some songs end just as they seem to get going, and their three-part vocal harmonies can be overwhelming at times. That's all just nitpicking though, as the night clearly belongs to this home-grown quintet. [Neal Parsons]
