A promising Glasgow debut from Dundee supergroup

Article by Ryan Drever | 31 Mar 2009

In a cluster of feedback, distortion and energetic blasts, Hey Vampires! (****) kick off an evening of noise and new sounds, curated by United Fruit. The Glasgow-based trio embark on a destructive journey through a set of passionate and boisterous punk-hardcore numbers which ends brilliantly with singer/bass player MC, sans bass, simply screaming his lungs out.

Next up are Your Loyal Subjects (***) whose excitable fusion of everything from punk and funk to all-out metal riffage is somewhat damaged by a messy overall sound. However, when they are at their most brutal, or experimental, this two-piece from Edinburgh sound very promising indeed.

Due to a general lack of punctuality in the proceedings, United Fruit(****) - as promoters for this evening - are left with a shorter set in order to make room for tonight's headliners. However, what the set lacks in quantity is made up for with a confidently delivered, powerful cocktail of melody and jagged discord.

Combining members from Avast, Laeto, and the now sadly defunct Alamos, Thews (***) could quite easily be referred to as a Dundee scene 'supergroup'. That in mind, expectations would seem fairly high. However, what ensues - somewhat unexpectedly - is a curious mash-up of melodic punk, heavy stabs and occasional flashes of '80s power-metal. At times this works to great effect - when vocalist Fritz unleashes ear-piercing screams to a backdrop of technical noodling, it's really a sight to behold - but the casual delivery and seemingly unfocused blurring of styles occasionally detracts from an otherwise promising Glasgow debut.
