A bumper Glasgow crowd braves biblical rains to revel with The Snuts on the second night of their SWG3 run

When the Snuts take to the stage on this second night of their two-date run at the Galvanizers Yard, it's fair to say the weather is playing its part in making proceedings as dramatic as possible.

As the opening chords of recent single Gloria ring out, the heavens open and torrential rain pours down. Frontman Jack Cochrane gazes out upon the waterlogged masses and seems genuinely moved that so many people are willing to ignore the elements and instead give themselves over wholeheartedly to the West Lothian outfit's crowd-pleasing anthems.

After rattling through the somewhat ironic (given the circumstances) Maybe California, Cochrane says: “Thank you so fucking much for coming out and standing for hours in the rain. I think it makes you look even more beautiful.” It is not the last time he expresses his gratitude.

More hits from The Snuts' considerable back catalogue follow. Burn the Empire and the blistering Don’t Forget It (Punk) elicit strong reactions and mass singalongs. One of the real highlights of the night follows next, as an acoustic rendition of Glasgow, a heartfelt love-letter to the city, predictably blows the (non-existent) roof off. The chemistry and connection between the band and the crowd is palpable, and it is obvious how deeply the artists care for the audience who are standing before them. Follow-up number Top Deck doesn’t get quite the same reception, and some fans take the opportunity to wander off to the bar or the toilet.

The rain abates long enough for the Snuts to bring back out the electric guitars and remind everyone in attendance that there are some things in life more important than music, and the message 'PEOPLE MAKE GLASGOW, REFUGEES WELCOME' flashes across the screens to rapturous applause. It is admirable to see young musicians unafraid to align their politics with their art.

The best is saved for last, of course. Just as many in the crowd are considering calling it quits and admitting defeat to the weather, the encore kicks off with Somebody Loves You and everyone is immediately brought back on side. Fatboy Slim provides the perfect feel-good ending to the night, with everyone in attendance singing their hearts out, and when The Snuts throw in a snippet of Robbie Williams’ Let Me Entertain You, the Galvanizers Yard erupts. There’s one last profuse thank you from the band as they head off the stage; the crowd dissipate into the night, soaked to the bone, but with smiles widely drawn across their faces.
