The Breeders @ King Tut's Wah Wah Hut, 20 May

Article by Gillian Watson | 25 May 2009

The concert equivalent of a cocktease is surely going to see The Breeders and not being able to catch a glimpse of the sisters Deal. Lucky, then, that this writer isn't blessed with any such appendage, as in tonight's capacity crowd, no one save the front row has much of a view. It's also lucky that this band are capable of smearing the walls with kaleidoscopic feedback. While this show is more shambolic than the superlative ABC set the band served up in support of 2008's Mountain Battles, there's something more satisfying about seeing them playing fast and loose with an excellent back catalogue at such close quarters.

There are endearing missteps along the way (Bang On's lo-fi disco falls flat live, and they need Carrie Bradley back on violin quick before Kelley has to saw her way gamely through Drivin' On 9 again); however, there is also tearjerking transcendence on a quietly astonishing Do You Love Me Now? and the moment when the waves of Safari's elemental brilliance almost drown Kim's honey-sweet coo and the rest of us with her. What's more, this indie-rock royalty deign to allow us to kiss their hems at a poster signing afterwards. In exchange for having to stand behind six of Glasgow's tallest men, I reckon that's a pretty good Deal.
