Tegan and Sara @ HMV Picture House, 15 Nov

Live Review by Lauren Mayberry | 19 Nov 2009

Given the unbelievable difficulty I had in persuading someone to come see Tegan and Sara with me, I began to fear that I was missing something. However, I was pleasantly surprised. Self-deprecating and genial, the Canadians fired through a set of 'hits' including The Con, Walking with Ghosts and Back In Your Head, as well as the unexpected Soil, Soil and the understated Call It Off.

Supplying a healthy dose of new album- Chris Walla's Sainthood- the sisters are beginning to claw their way out of the depths of cult, highlighting the ignorance in passing them off as writers of L Word party music. The Quins' emotive lyrics may be too saccharine for some, but were rapturously received by the seasoned fanbase, a healthy male presence to boot.

Despite the odd bit of vocal work notably missing its mark and some predictably power-pop moments, they produced a full, personal and intricate sound. Only one ill-natured heckling-addict threatened the mood, later receiving a good kicking and ejection from the venue. And although it would be wrong to condone violence... that's karma, my friend.
