TeenCanteen / BooHooHoo @ Sneaky Pete's, 30 Sep

Live Review by Katie Hawthorne | 10 Oct 2016

Sneaky Pete's is extremely sold-out. It's TeenCanteen's party – and an album launch party, at that – so it's only right that they should have hand-picked their stage mates. Warming up the already rowdy crowd are BooHooHoo; the new Glaswegian band are tipped for greatness by TeenCanteen's Carla Easton, and the electro-indie four piece kill it with energy, charisma and colourful, funk-infused hooks.

Although TeenCanteen officially launched their first album Say It All With A Kiss in Glasgow earlier in the month, Edinburgh's delighted to turn out and help celebrate. Easton beams, looking out over the packed-out room: "I recognise a lot of you, and a lot of you helped us make it, so this is your debut album too!"

It's just one of the reasons why the night feels closer to a greatest hits than a debut. Condensing those already acutely messy feelings of friendship, heartbreak and love at first sight, songs like Honey and Roses reach sing-a-long fever pitch ('It's A-L-W-A-Y-S, it's always for youuu') and How We Met sets even the most unlikely audience members pogo-ing. Easton, Sita Pieraccini, Chloe Phillip and Debbie Smith have been playing together for years longer than their discography suggests, and their chemistry shines: these are steely, triumphant, girl-powered anthems, they're coated in glitter and all the more powerful for it.

We're permitted short-lived breathers for the precise harmonies of Motorbikes, the slow-burning fuse which begins Friends, and the occasionally ambient, synth-based soundscapes that pop our bubblegum – but just for a few seconds. Sirens makes for a Hounds Of Love-inspired, kaleidoscopic finale – or, it would have done, if the band hadn't been unable to leave Sneaky's confined stage. The whole room demands more, and TeenCanteen offer a perfectly timed mash-up of hallowed girl bands that came before them: how's TLC'S Waterfalls and All Saints' Never Ever for an encore? Giddy and excitable, Sneaky's crowd bounces out on to the Cowgate more than ready for the weekend.

Say It All With A Kiss is released on 9 Sep via Last Night From Glasgow Records
