Spinning Coin's album launch tonight is a jubilant celebration showing off just how talented this Glasgow five-piece

Live Review by Claire Francis | 27 Nov 2017

Five is the magic number tonight at Mono for Spinning Coin's debut album launch. Support act Hairband, a side project from Simone Wilson of Breakfast Muff, are a five-strong group (just don't call them an 'all-girl' band). They start out a little shaky, but it could be the sketchy sound quality from the seated area of the venue. By their third song, they begin to hit their stride, with dark wobbly surf rock riffs and rolling drums. The harmonies remain a bit pitchy, but the rhythm section holds fast, with a sound that draws inevitable comparisons to the likes of Warpaint. Rose Keeler-Schäffeler then takes the stage as Keel Her, with a new backing line-up (our second quintet of the evening) delivering a grooving, bluesy set with some nice garage surf rhythms.

It's Spinning Coin's night though – the five-piece have served up one of the best Scottish albums of the year with Permo, and this performance is a jubilant celebration of their debut record. The differences between Jack Mellin and Sean Armstrong's vocal delivery ensure the shape of the set is always shifting. Mellin drives tracks like the the riff-driven indie rocker Tin and the grungy jam Money is a Drug, while Armstrong's delicate voice, with its slight vibrato, illuminates songs like the tender Floating With You and the wistful Sleepless.

Bassist Cal Donnelly (also of Breakfast Muff) also takes on vocal duties, showing the group's breadth of talent (and with a very Pixies-esque delivery, giving a nod to the group's more obvious 90s grunge influences). Permo is a sprawling, captivating debut, and tonight Spinning Coin announce their arrival in suitably emphatic fashion.
