Sons and Daughters are giving their all but they just aren’t getting it in return

Article by Marta Nelson | 23 Nov 2008

Kicking off the last show of the first series of Tennent's Mutual gigs on a promising note come My Latest Novel. The faint echoes of Arcade Fire remain, but the Greenock based quintet’s plaintive sound is well received and quirky additions (their spoken word is a treat) go right along with their ease on stage. However, occasionally it seems like some of the band members take ‘ease’ too far and begin to wander, resulting in the rhythm becoming oddly chaotic, which becomes more frustrating than endearing. But some songs, such as the new Dear Green Place, bring both audience and band together symphonically.

The atmosphere takes a definite turn, however, when Errors take the stage. The band members are as in sync as their synth-pop beats and often convulse with the music in unison - no one is having as much fun as they are. But, for the unaware, Errors is a strictly instrumental band, and after a full set it’s easy to think you may have been listening to the soundtrack pumping from your brother’s X-Box. If the crowd caught the mood and turned the gig into a club scene it would make perfect sense, but instead they cheer when the band announces they’re about to play the last song.

Adele Bethel has the alluring knack of keeping time on her hip bones – perhaps she’s signalling a call for help? Beginning with This Gift, the front woman of Sons and Daughters leads the Glasgow four-piece through their set of fierce, almost-growling rock with a fair measure of grace and lashings of tenacity, rarely bothering to pause between songs. But despite the band’s energy and obvious skill, the crowd packed into the Paisley Town Hall is still remarkably sedate, almost to the point of embarrassment. Sons and Daughters are giving their all and they just aren’t getting it in return. Like lovers out of sync, the band tries in vain to invoke some sort of response while the punters simply yawn and roll over.

Played as part of the Tennent's Mutual 2008.
