Ride return rejuvenated and reinvigorated by a new record

Live Review by Alan O'Hare | 15 Nov 2017

We're all bored of comebacks. Yes, we get it, you're friends again and ready to play that debut album from top to bottom in a town by us soon. Yep, we can all see the merch and Pledge offers available and can't wait to part with cash to buy things we already own. Twice. But, hang on, this one is different.

Ride have done the first bit and got (well, sold) the t-shirt. The Oxfordshire shoegazers have now developed a third act and against all odds have turned it into a winning one: the successful new album. Weather Diaries was released to critical acclaim earlier this year and the band are taking its songs to their people. Sure, there's a smattering of big hitters early on to satisfy Sunday evening melancholy and nostalgia, but new songs Lannoy Point, Charm Assault and the devastating title-track all get the smaller room of Liverpool's O2 Academy moving. Ride are on a roll.

Old favourites Twisterella and Chelsea Girl still jangle like the best C-86 nugget you've never heard, but it's the big bottom end and biting blues of the new tunes that really stand out here. The fans down the front of the 500-capacity venue can't believe they're seeing their heroes this close-up and it's true the sound engulfs the room to create a very special atmosphere.

Ride were uncertain of their place in the world before getting back together; how ironic that they only had to hop back into their own one to rightfully reclaim what was theirs.
