Qui @ King Tut's, 20 Nov

Live Review by Dave Kerr | 06 Jan 2008

For a frontman who is more intrepid than most when he has a mic in his fist, David Yow cuts an unassuming figure as he shimmies around Tut's while Hey Enemy (***) battle technical disasters. Pitting didgeridoo against malfunctioning guitar, their raucous set miraculously falls into place for its finale before Qui step up and Yow seizes an opportunity to break out of his shell for an hour of pure delinquence.

The provocative side that earned him a reputation while he was with The Jesus Lizard soon enough reveals itself when he dives into the crowd for a mid-gig 'mingle' and distastefully snarls: "Who do you need to fuck to get a bagel in here?" Over-zealous fans take this as the green light to scream in his face as Matt Cronk and Paul Christensen batter out Love's Miracle in jumbled order; Freeze is sludge rock par excellence and Gash is the chiming, hypnotic centrepiece while a Floyd cover here and Zappa homage there embellish the palette well. As Yow jumps down from the stage and trades in mania for a cold post-match pint, it appears that Jekyll and Hyde's modern day host has returned with a vengeance.
