Phoebe Bridgers @ St Luke's, Glasgow, 20 May

Phoebe Bridgers performs in the perfect surroundings of Saint Luke's tonight, and armed with little more than her acoustic guitar she tugs on more than just a few heart strings

Live Review by Max Sefton | 23 May 2018

It’s a full Saint Luke's as Californian singer-songwriter Phoebe Bridgers rolls into town. The precociously talented young writer is taking her brilliant 2017 record Stranger in the Alps on the road and what better place for a set heavy on the musings on loss and redemption than a converted church?

Fresh from a morning yoga session, Bridgers jokes with the audience as she leads her small band through a dozen tracks from her two studio records and a pair of choice covers. In her short career Bridgers has already been championed by the likes of Bon Iver and Ryan Adams but tonight she controls the stage with ease. It’s a bold choice to open with Smoke Signals, the aching paean to Lemmy, Bowie and lost love that introduced her to many fans but it’s an inspired choice for winning over the crowd as a packed balcony claps appreciatively.

Cover-wise there is nothing that stretches her outside her comfort zone much – the sweet late eighties break-up song It’ll All Work Out from Tom Petty and Mark Kozelek and Jimmy Lavelle’s even more weepy You Missed My Heart. Similarly her own songs like Scott Street or Funeral tend to more or less all be minor key laments built on simple strummed acoustic guitar, but she’s an adept lyricist with a sharp eye for the darker side of the Golden State.

Heart fluttering break-up anthem Motion Sickness is the sharpest moment of the night and the first that really sees her voice soar while Demi Moore, her exquisitely sad and vulnerable song about sending pictures to a lover far away has more than a few fans misting over. Phoebe Bridgers packs a huge talent into her tiny blonde frame; she’s not quite the finished article yet but armed with little more than her acoustic guitar she’s already adept at tugging at your heart strings.
