No Age @ Mono, Glasgow, 1 Apr

No Age return to their spiritual home tonight for a show that leans heavily on their latest album, Snares Like a Haircut

Vital Idles take the stage with an unassuming confidence not often seen in support bands. Maybe it's because this is the hometown gig of the tour, but, more likely it comes from knowing you have the material to silence any naysayers. Jessica Higgins delivers every line with a disaffected deadpan that borders on boredom – unless the song calls for tongue-in-cheek forced sincerity (My Sentiments) – while the band scurry to fill in the blanks with propulsive, bass-centric punk licks.

No Age follow shortly after with an expected lack of fanfare and dive straight into Cruise Control and Stuck in the Changer, the first two songs of their stellar new album Snares Like a Haircut. It very much sets the scene for the rest of the show – Dean Allen Spunt bashing drums, or setting up some electronics, while shouting out the vocals, and Randy Randall shredding the guitar with his hair covering his face.

There are occasional moments of peace for a few words of thanks, especially to the venue which is something of a spiritual kin to the band due to its DIY credentials, but it's mostly all business. Older cuts like Sleeper Hold and Fever Dreaming inspire a small but enthusiastic pit up front that tries to keep pace with the band's furious noise rhythms, and Randall even joins them, guitar firmly in hand, on the floor during C'mon, Stimmung.

The whole affair is efficient and streamlined; there's few wasted moments in a show that barely cracks the hour mark. The set leans heavily on Snares Like a Haircut, but familiar favourites like Glitter and Teen Creeps are delivered with the same tidy aplomb as the new stuff. No Age may be the definition of 'no-frills', but when the baseline is already so high there's no need to stretch further.
