Mumford & Sons @ Cabaret Voltaire, 8 Aug

Article by Rosie Nolan | 10 Aug 2009

Playing the second of two nights, Mumford and Sons are bristling with stubbly energy tonight. Awake My Soul opens as a real spinetingler; awash with pitch-perfect harmonies and finger-acrobatics from banjoist Winston Marshall. A thumping bass beat picks up the pace, swerving along beneath lead-singer Marcus Johnstone’s hauntingly gritty rasp. Forthcoming single Little Lion Man ratchets up the tempo, demonstrating the quartet’s electrifying unity - something emphasised by their exhausting individual talents. A string of warmly received new tracks segue into White Blank Page and Roll Away Your Stone, the soaring harmonies and rib-rattling bass-lines whipping an already appreciative crowd into a spot of sweaty mini-ceilidhing. Sister provides a mellower encore, by which time Mumford are at a final “soul” count of 17. Whilst their incredible skill is arguably not stretched by some lyrics - “your soul you must keep, totally free” - there’s no denying that whatever the Sons do, their hearts are entirely into it.

Also playing Loopallu Festival, Invernesshire on 19 Sep.
