Mother and The Addicts @ Cabaret Voltaire 20th January

the fans will have been nursing their collective broken feet to match their pounding cranium

Hailing from Glasgow, Mother And The Addicts are a reclusive bunch, with little known about them apart from the fact that the lead guitarist and the bassist are husband and wife. Regardless, the Cab Vol crowd was a receptive one; from the second they hit the stage, the dance floor was heaving, and doubtlessly, by the next morning the fans will have been nursing their collective broken feet to match their pounding cranium. Refreshingly, MaTA play music that's impossible to confine to any one pigeonhole ranging from garage rock to doo-wop. Their repertoire is a disparate one, with a synth thrown in here and there to accompany the three guitars. Although they have the tightness of a pop band, the spirit of punk runs through them more than anything else and this shone through throughout the set, which was fast, furious, and a real pleasure to watch.
