Mose Allison @ Fruitmarket, 25 Jun

Article by David McNally | 06 Jul 2010

Ole man Mose has been at the heart of American songcraft for about 55 years now. The Who covered him Live at Leeds and Jools Holland practically owes his career to the guy, yet here he is in Glasgow on a Friday night, 80-something year old and spry as you like.

Ably supported by similarly old as balls Roy Babington on bass, he sits at the piano and turns 'em out: a few country blues about city living, a little ditty about Jekyll and Hyde, one about celluar organisation, love songs, some insult songs, some choice covers. The interplay between the two codgers is sublime, and Mose does this charming involuntary scatting thing between lines; if your granny did it that would be the first step on the road to having her commited, but with Mose it just shows his commitment.

The crowd, who it has to be said are of a greying vintage, go politely bananas. He deserves 3 encores but only plays one. But he played for 90 minutes, longer than Mr McCartney when he was in town a few days back. Beatles nil, Mose one I feel. [David McNally]

Played as part of Glasgow International Jazz Festival 2010.
