Mariachi El Bronx @ Òran Mór, 18 Nov

Article by Ryan Drever | 20 Nov 2009

It's hard to know what to expect from a Mariachi band's support act, but Finnish duo Jakko and Jay transcend any such pondering with an intensely eccentric set of acoustic-punk numbers. Dancing and screaming their way through broken strings, musings on the meaning of life and quests for weed, this double-team make for an exhilarating and hilarious watch.

However, the hero's welcome is reserved for Mariachi El Bronx tonight as the sharply dressed alter-egos of LA punks, The Bronx take to the stage to a roar of appreciation. Admittedly low on songs, the band - all sharply dressed in traditional Mariachi attire - make up for this with a cool and almost faultless performance, effortlessly waltzing their way through cuts from debut album El Bronx - as well as a hugely entertaining rendition of Prince's I Would Die 4 U - much to the delight of the Òran Mór assembly.
