Lush Purr @ Leith Depot, Edinburgh, 18 May

Live Review by Nadia Younes | 22 May 2017

Venues don’t come much more intimate than this: it’s small, it’s sweaty and it’s above a pub. Taking place upstairs in Leith Depot, Glasgow foursome Lush Purr are hosting a loud and grungy affair in celebration of their new album Cuckoo Waltz. Fresh from a mini-tour supporting fellow Song, by Toad labelmate Meursault – in the crowd watching the show tonight – the band are well-practised in performing their new tracks live by now, and it shows.

Even though guitarist/synth player Andres Fazio is ousted from the stage, as it is simply too small to fit everyone in the band and their instruments, Lush Purr provide an incredibly tight set of scuzzy, lo-fi, garage-pop goodness. During the last song of the night, their most recent single (I Admit It) I’m a Gardener, frontman Gavin Will spends much of the latter half on the floor, looking like he may have to be dragged off the stage before he will stop playing.

There is a certain energy and excitement in a room when watching such a promising new band in such a small venue that is difficult to explain, but you get that feeling from watching Lush Purr. They’ve got the songs, they’ve got the musical skills and most importantly, they look like they’re having a lot of fun.

With an impressive catalogue of tunes already under their belts and an ability to put on an exciting live show, even in such a small venue, Lush Purr are a band that seem set for great things.
