Lizzard Lounge @ HMV Picture House, 30 Jul

Article by David McNally | 06 Aug 2010

The Picture House is a bigger venue than the Lizzard Lounge is used to (being a much loved, now passed Edinburgh club night), but the transition works well and the names lined up for tonight have just about filled the place. Soul boy Joe Malik is up first, jumping around and getting folk moving, but musically it only starts to cook when he's joined by the sultry and stunning Nikki King on vocals for a cover of Dr John's Such a Night.

London rapper Ty partially impresses with his call and response shtick, then the Rumba Caliente Afro Latin Soul Orchestra bring some spice and set hips to swaying all over the joint. By the time Fred Wesley appears it's past 2 AM, but he is still the standout of the night, tearing the roof off the room and killing everyone inside with smoky horns and charisma to burn.
