LCD Soundsystem at Barrowlands

James Murphy has mastered the middle of the party but the warm up and encore need a lot more work.

You've got to wonder what made James Murphy pick Prinzhorn Dance School as his support act; a band estranged from melody, they shout "Switzerland" over two, sometimes three, note riffs. The almost total lack of applause is hilarious. Cultivating a party atmosphere on a freezing Monday is tricky, but LCD Soundsystem damn near manage it. Appearing in a blaze of silver light - with added glitter balls - they soon get everyone in the mood with an early play of Daft Punk Is Playing At My House. The standout is easily Yeah, its incredible build up reaching an almost orgasmic peak, although when the chorus is chanted by 1,000-odd Glaswegians with increasing intensity, it becomes more disturbing than euphoric. All's going well then, until it lands on New York, I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down to close the show like a damp squib. Murphy has mastered the middle of the party, it seems, but the warm up and encore need a lot more work. [Heather Crumley]
