LCD Soundsystem @ Barrowlands, 28 April

Article by Ally Brown | 06 May 2010

At times, LCD Soundsystem live feels like the greatest show on earth. The highlights of tonight's Barrowlands set are mesmerising: the raucous second-half climaxes of Daft Punk Is Playing At My House and Yeah, the Sylvester-like Optimo tribute featuring James Murphy's sky-high falsetto; the protracted intro to Someone Great, new roars for each element introduced; the glorious, uplifting finale of All My Friends. At these moments the entire sell-out crowd appear to be cajoled by invisible puppeteers, arms waving, bodies sashaying out of control.

Inevitably, it's impossible for LCD Soundsystem to keep the energy level so high throughout. When they try a new song, as they do four times, everyone disconnects a little, stops dancing. A thunderous Losing My Edge, featuring fans all around reciting the lyrics word-for-word, laughing at them, and throwing their bodies forward at the breakdown, is followed by All I Want -- one of the new record's best tracks -- which is casually nodded along to, waited out. It's unfortunate, then, that This Is Happening is still three weeks from release on the night; if LCD return to these shores after it's had time to settle in, it'll be worth selling a kidney for a ticket.
