Kid Canaveral / Come On Gang! @ Voodoo Rooms, 13 Dec

Article by Ally Brown | 19 Dec 2008

Tonight's special Saturday night Limbo celebrates the launch of a joint 7" single by Come On Gang! and Kid Canaveral, but perhaps it was a mistake to book a better band as support for the two headliners. It's asking too much of most groups to follow Super Adventure Club (****) these days, and as Edinburgh's music scene seems to be coalescing around a handful of tender folkies, it's refreshing to hear some abrasive noise get up the noses of the Voodoo Rooms' genteel clientele. A few new songs are aired, including one which fades to almost silence before screeching back into life, but with approximately three thousand different rhythms played in a dazzling eight song set, it's SAC's drummer who has done most to show up his party hosts tonight.

Come On Gang!'s (***) drummer is also their singer, and her voice is easily the most interesting thing here: pitched high and lilting, it's distinctive enough to act as a vinaigrette on what is otherwise a rather plain salad. Then again, a knee-jabbing crowd is soon convinced into dancing properly, motored by the singer's driving rhythms and the sharp, punky guitar riffs. The set’s highlight sees all three band members on their feet, singer looping a sweet melody while the guitarists go through their effects pedals, but while Come On Gang!'s energy means they know how to entertain a crowd, it's all a bit one-dimensional.

Headliners Kid Canaveral (**) seem even more limited. Like approximately 73% of Scottish guitar bands, they play sweet-smelling indie-pop in the Teenage Fanclub tradition (and even namecheck them during one song), with hints of Camera Obscura, Belle and Sebastian, and 72.9% of all other Scottish guitar bands. That's the problem: being derivative isn't an issue as long as you've got great songs. Kid Canaveral seem to fall at that hurdle, though they have one great song called Smash Hits that could live up to its name. It's a committed performance, but in light of what's gone before, they need more than that to impress.
