Jon Cleary @ Assembly, Princes Street Gardens, 31 Jul

Article by David McNally | 06 Aug 2010

Jon Cleary's piano trio bring some authentic New Orleans gumbo to a sunny Edinburgh afternoon; close your eyes and you could be on Beale Street hearing the saints go marching in. 100 minutes of swampy, funky fun are heralded by Ray Charles' MaryAnn, taken at a brisk clip, Cleary's vocals fleetingly recalling Bruce Hornsby. But his touch, easy mastery of idioms from gospel to syncopated strut and above all his fleet way with rhythm place him in a class of his own.

And a little showbiz doesn't hurt either – he stomps his feet, mugs at the crowd and drives his rhythm section on with shouted exhortations - clearly a man who enjoys his job. The joy seems to be contagious, prompting an ovation and an encore where he adds a passage in mambo to his array of styles. Next time you're in Louisiana, look him up. [David McNally]
