Japanese Breakfast @ Mono, Glasgow, 21 May

A disruptive crowd during Phillip Taylor's support slot sets the night off on the wrong foot, but Japanese Breakfast still manages to deliver a stunning performance

Filled to the absolute brim, a restless crowd at Mono are hungry for some glistening dream-rock – but they won’t get it from the evening’s support act. Phillip Taylor (of PAWS) delivers an emotive set, but one that could have done with a little more oomph. “I know you’re here for the rock show,” he says apologetically, “and I’m not rock.” Unable to fully command the audience’s attention, at points it’s hard to even hear his acoustic set over the obnoxious chatter of the room. The crowd finally hush down when Taylor talks about his friend Scott Hutchison, for whom he dedicates a poignant rendition of The Modern Leper. Sad that it took such a beautiful tribute to get everyone to shut up and listen.

If the reaction towards her support is an undeserved shrug, the energy when Japanese Breakfast (real name Michelle Zauner) climbs onstage is palpable. Donning a floral jacket and light-up shoes, she looks like a rock star sent back in time from the future. She sounds like one too, frequently distorting her vocals with switches and knobs. A resolute smile beams across her face as she performs a fittingly alien rendition of Machinist. It’s not until late into the set that Zauner dials it back with a string of stripped-back performances. The wistful This House fares the best, where the rest of Zauner’s band exit the stage and leave her to deliver a stunning reflection on the comfort of home.

The extended lull is a sobering detour, and an impressive showcase of Zauner’s impressive vocal chops, but it’s within the vibrant that the set is at its best. She’s an incredibly talented physical performer, making use of every inch of the stage and beyond – at one point casually jumping down and sauntering through the audience. “After this let’s get really drunk,” she declares, “tonight is when my alter ego… Shelley comes out.” A set from Shelley sounds like a hoot, but I don't think I'd trade it for the one Michelle gave us.
