Isa and the Filthy Tongues @ The Granary, 7 Jun

A show of assured psychobilly delivered in a suitably debauched manner

Posing as the ‘mini-me’ of the imminent Fringe Festival, the final night of the I Love Leith festival shows no signs of festival fatigue as widely respected Isa and the Filthy Tongues inject The Granary (quaint restaurant and bar by day, un-assuming music venue by night) with their brand of straight up rock and roll, tinted with 50s surf culture.

Breathing life into the night, second to last support Fox Gang (4/5) surprise and entertain the crowd with chaotic sounds reminiscent of early day Talking Heads. Boasting a tight, infectious rhythm section and a front-man whose antics and eerie trench coat give him a ‘fresh out of the asylum’ appeal. It's odd, it's manic, but the Gang are a charming bunch.

Isa and the Filthy Tongues keep the night's CBGB undertone alive, evoking the spirit of Blondie and practically matching them in both appearance and chemistry. Soon enough the room's heaving with their die hard fans and the headliners spit out their raucous brand of ramalama sleaze rock in the form of highlights such as Rebel Girl, Sorority Girl and She Said Yeah. Oozing her trademark femme fatale approach throughout, Isa keeps many of the bystanders salivating into their pints. On the few occasions she tones it down, she evokes a softer Kat Bjelland (of riot grrrl pioneers Babes in Toyland). It all equates to a show of assured psychobilly delivered in a suitably debauched manner. [Vanessa Cox]
