Honeyblood @ The Liquid Room, Edinburgh, 22 Apr

Live Review by Mia Abeyawardene | 24 Apr 2017

On a busy Saturday night in Edinburgh, The Liquid Room is packed with a crowd eagerly anticipating the lo-fi, indie rock duo Honeyblood. The PA system plays out a recording of a woman hauntingly murmuring ‘never die’ several times with growing intensity, as the band takes the stage. Stina Tweeddale and Cat Myers open their set with the vitriolic Justine, Misery Queen, from their latest album Babes Never Die before remarking that it's great to be playing a gig in their hometown again.

After a heckler professes his love for Myers, she's ready with a cool, casual response: "Oh wow the ‘L’ word – we’ve only just met so I don’t know if I’m there yet but I definitely like you." Tweeddale feigns jealousy and dedicates their next song Hey, Stellar to her bandmates new-found ‘love’. Between several tracks from the new album, Tweeddale thanks their fans for coming out to the show – especially those who attended her solo set earlier in the afternoon for VoxBox's Record Store Day celebrations in Stockbridge – describing it as leaving her with "a warm, fuzzy feeling in her heart." Honeyblood are active promoters of the vinyl revival, improvising a funky beat with free-styled lyrics to remind their fans to buy merchandise after the show.

Honeyblood’s set ranges in emotions, gradually transitioning from the electrifying riot grrl guitar riffs of Choker to the more wistful, reflective Biro. The duo admit to not doing encores, before treating the crowd to their hit single Super Rat taken from their 2014 self-titled debut, which has everyone united in chanting the defiantly aggressive lyrics: ‘I will hate you forever!'

Despite much encouragement from the band to get up and dance, the Edinburgh crowd is somewhat reserved. However, Myers has a genius plan to get everyone moving – promising her broken drumstick to the best dancer. Although The Liquid Room security have to intervene at one point, asking people not to climb on each other’s shoulders, Myers' competition has worked and the room is buzzing with energy as a mosh pit breaks out as Killer Bangs brings proceedings to a close.
