Haftor Medbøe Group @ Voodoo Rooms, 6 Aug

Article by David McNally | 10 Aug 2010

With a line-up featuring saxaphone, trombone, drums and bass, one might expect a piano, but the chorded instrument here is Haftor Medbøe's guitar, which he makes subtle but effective use of throughout. Tonight the group specialise in subdued minor key excursions and everything is very much of a mellow piece. This is fine if you're in a certain mood, but a touch more light and shade would not go amiss.

In saying that, some colour is added at times, firstly by Medbøe treating his instument, creating an electric counterpoint with himself by sampling a droney figure, looping it and playing Arabic scales over the top with a bow, and secondly with the addition of Anneke Kampman on breathy vocals. She sings two very well received songs and provides wistful lyrics which suit the ambience very well. Special mention to Konrad Wiszniewski for some powerful tenor blowing too. [David McNally]
