Gold Panda @ King Tut's, 8 October

Live Review by PJ Meiklem | 11 Oct 2011

It’s not just the red paper lantern hanging from his lighting rig that hints at Gold Panda's interest in all things far eastern, but the series of traditional Japanese samples that the Panda (real name Derwin) at first lets float out over a packed King Tut's, and then chops into a manic, hardcore suey of fastpaced techno right at the zenith of his entertaining Saturday night set.

The Londoner and former student at the School of Oriental and African Studies plays an eclectic set, keeping the better-known tunes from debut record Lucky Shiner for the back end of his show. The bit of this, bit of that aesthetic alienates no-one, with the crowd lapping up the ambient trance of the first few numbers.

The pretty samples, snatched from a summer’s day and coaxed out of his laptop on demand, create a warm dreamy vibe that’s well suited to the early evening slot, and when a young David Bowie look-a-like stages an impromptu stage invasion/guerrilla rave it all fits together like the pieces of an oriental box that the Panda himself would no doubt appreciate.
