Gojira @ Classic Grand, 12 Mar

A masterclass in furious noise.

Article by Ryan Drever | 19 Mar 2009

For those at all familiar with French metallers Gojira, the intensity of tonight's performance at the gravity-defying Classic Grand was to be expected, but is no less visceral and exciting. For those at a loss as to who this band even are, this is a masterclass in blinding, furious metal. The overheard cries of 'man, i'm just here with my mates, but this is fucking incredible!' are surely testament to this.

The mixture of a perfectly honed light show - complete with strobes and devilish red rays - perfectly synced video backdrops, and an overall sound that is ten times more brutal and explosive than record quality all makes for a compelling set. Songs like Love and The Heaviest Matter Of The Universe throw the adoring onlookers into a battle of frenzied limbs mirrored by an equally energetic performance from the band themselves. Already four albums in, it seems strange to witness this band in such small surroundings, but on the strength of this monstrous performance, the next tour will surely require a much larger stomping ground.
