Giggs @ O2 ABC, Glasgow, 18 Apr

Live Review by Chris McCall | 27 Apr 2017

This is a good time to be Giggs. The rapper from Peckham is on his biggest UK-wide tour to date and his most recent album, Landlord, is still doing the business more than six months on from its release. Then there's the small matter of his collaborations with Drake, which has boosted his profile immeasurably.

Playing to a sold-out crowd at the Glasgow ABC, many of whom are undoubtedly recent converts, Giggs' recurring troubles with law enforcement in London must seem a very long way away. Down in the capital his shows have often been shut down long before the doors can open. But up in Scotland, dressed in a fetching sweater, he's every inch the affable grime star. When a few plastic pint glasses land on the stage between songs, he politely asks for the drinks to be cleaned up. "I'm gonna slip," he grins, taking another swig of his Cognac and coke.

He has a right to be cautious. Compared to some other rappers, who prefer to let the beat take the strain, he's a high-energy performer. He jumps in time throughout The Blow Back – one of the stand-outs on Landlord – while also laying down rhymes; an impressive feat of stamina. While his profile may not equal that of his good friend Stormzy, Giggs has a likeable charm of his own. His everyman quality is further boosted with choice lines like 'I could've rocked the Armani / but man dropped the Gabbanas'.

The biggest roar of the night is reserved for when Giggs spits his verse from KMT, from Drake’s More Life playlist. As one critic put it, Giggs doesn't guest on this track, he takes it over. It could yet be the ticket that allows him access to the big leagues across the Atlantic, far from the long arm of the law he's been forced to grapple with in London in the past.
