Georgie James @ Nice 'n' Sleazy

Some sexy, bad influence will help to make a name for Georgie James

Georgie James sounds like the name of the kid Ziggy Stardust would've conned into buying all the drugs. The Washington D.C. duo says they chose the name because 'it's a bit glam and androgynous.' However, tonight at Sleazy's their obscure intention seems misrepresented and unidentifiable. Georgie James plays animated pop, at moments reminiscent of Ben Folds. Jeff Davies (vocals/guitar) moves seamlessly between electric and acoustic while shifting from lead to back-up vocals. Lauren Burhenn's voice is Georgie James' preeminent asset. Like velvety resonance it captures the audience's attention. The duo plays off each other well, but there's a raw chemistry missing from the set. It's all a bit too superficial and clean — all puppies and posies. Their talent is evident, but the provocation necessary for a great live show is lacking. More live gig experience and some sexy, bad influence will help to make a name for Georgie James. [Beth Malone]
