Franz Ferdinand @ Barrowlands, 5 Mar

Article by Allan Valente | 06 Apr 2009

Franz Ferdinand mercifully emerge at 9pm, cutting short a headache-inducing DJ who is crazy on drum 'n’ bass. They're clad in dapper threads this evening and sound equally as slick when they tear into The Dark of the Matinee. Alex Kapranos brims with good vibrations and Franz generally appear as though there's no place in the world they'd rather be right now. The backdrop to No You Girls sees pink lips and seductive eyelashes tease the more testosterone-charged members of the crowd, but it doesn’t distract from the jagged notes which protrude into the ballroom air from twisting and weaving guitars. By the time the cool electro-funk of Ulysses shakes around the room for the encore, the quartet can already celebrate a job very well done. They may have walked on looking sharp, but they left this homecoming in a sweaty, exhausted mess. A glorious return, then. [Allan Valente]
