Foo Fighters @ SECC, 9 Oct

As the Foo's talisman, Dave Grohl swaggers down the runway that leads from the SECC stage directly into the crowd looking every bit the rock God. The problem is this appearance has often flattered to deceive. Tonight, however, the Foos do not disappoint. Their energy is explosive; Grohl cajoles the crowd, and they duly respond in turn by singing heartily. New songs are greeted with excitement and don't halt the momentum, even though Road to Ruin sounds like a poor Springsteen imitation.

Having hammered through the opening half of their set at breakneck speed, the quartet reconvene on the stage at the end of the runway. Impressively, the acoustic numbers that follow have sufficient energy and spirit to keep things ticking along. Grohl then begins Everlong unaccompanied before the rest of the band, now back on the main stage, provide the song's huge climax that this crowd were baying for. It's taken as a sign that the riffs are back before Monkey Wrench and All My Life are subsequently unleashed. "I love you," Grohl gushes to the crowd before closer The Best Of You. Given the sheer number of roars and hands aloft, the feeling appears to be mutual. [Neal Parsons]
