Explosions in the Sky @ Barrowland

Holds the audience captive through the lapping of guitar and crash of cymbal.

What a strange, unnerving atmosphere it is, standing among a crowd of hyped
punters in Glasgow's home of raucous live performance, to see a band that ostensibly demands a hushed, unmoving reception. Explosions in the Sky are greeted with whoops and cries of "Texas!" - referring of course to the band's home state. Immediately they begin, the precisely layered aura spreads through the majority of the crowd, with only a few people indifferent enough to the pulsating landscapes of soft, stellar guitar to keep themselves from talking over the set. The hour-long performance, accompanied by great, distinctive lighting holds the captivated through the lapping arpeggio and crash of cymbal. The sizeable material played from 2003's The Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place parades along the elliptic ceiling, owning the archaic grandeur of the Barrowland. As the sets ends, the entranced souls are released back to their revelry. [Jamie Borthwick]
