Efterklang @ The Arches

An all-singing, all-dancing, all hand-clapping freak out

The tone for Efterklang's first visit to Glasgow is set perfectly by an attentive all-seated audience, a superb warm-up set from Peter Broderick- who well deserves his return to the stage with the headliners, if only for playing a saw with a violin bow - and a warmly lit stage decorated with peacock feathers. Looking like A Clockwork Orange themed Arcade Fire gang with their costumes and copious members, the band makes the most of this perfect tone. Powerful masculine vocal harmonies, boisterous trombones and seething violin solos carry songs from their sparse beginnings to triumphant climaxes that flood The Arches like burst water mains through a tunnel. Although a little formulaic, their songs are varied enough for each to impress with its subtle individual charms. The band clearly has a brilliant time, getting everyone off their seats for a rabble rousing all-singing, all-dancing, all hand-clapping freak out. [Shaun Love]
