Dougie MacLean @ Old Fruitmarket

Marvellous stuff

Article by Paul Greenwood | 05 Feb 2008
There's a lovely phenomenon peculiar to folk concerts attended primarily by the middle aged: the swiftly aborted single person clap-along. So rife is its application tonight that even the talent has to stop mid-song and ask for some peace. Still, you can't blame them, as the quite gorgeous surrounds of the Old Fruitmarket do look like they should be hosting a hoedown (and support act Cherryholmes wouldn't look out of place at an O Brother Where Art Thou convention). Those who turn up mainly on the strength of Caledonia (which, truth be told, probably includes The Skinny) find they're in for so much more; tales of the isles, of histories, of voyages, all presented with enormous enthusiasm, and with fiddle and whistle superbly integrated without going all diddle-dee-dee. And when licensed to give it some laldy on their own, they only go and play the music from Last of the Mohicans. Marvellous stuff. [Paul Greenwood]
